My American Summer
The summer I turned
twenty, I was living in Britain, attending university while the usual events
were happening in my family’s lives. My parents planned to spend their summer
vacation in the south of England, in the same cottage they had rented for the past
ten years. Naturally, they expected my two brothers and me to travel along with
them. As much as I loved my family, I was looking for a little more excitement
during the summer break. As if on cue, my best pal, Yvonne, called to ask if
I would like to accompany her on a trip to visit her grandparents in Florida. I
was over the moon. All it would cost was airfare, and I would get to try my
luck with American men.
The first day on the
beach in Fort Lauderdale, Yvonne and I were surreptitiously drinking beer out
of paper cups while we studied the local talent. The guy who caught my eye was running
the parasailing concession, and he was totally my type with shoulder-length dark
hair, and a body that was well-built without being hulky and disproportionate.
In my tipsy state, I told Yvonne I was going to have him before I went home.
She laughed and told me to go for it. She had her eye on the guy who ran the
Banana Boat Rides.
The next day, wearing my
new minuscule yellow bikini, I sucked in my belly and approached my target. His
name was Jeff, and what I hadn’t seen from a distance were his electric blue
eyes. We clicked immediately, chatting about anything and everything. He was
starting law school in the fall, and I was planning a career in advertising. After
that, we saw each other every day. We swam in the ocean, and took long walks
along the beach at night. I lost five pound in the next week, doubtlessly due
to my constant state of excitement. Boy, could he kiss.
I tried not to think
about it ending, but the last day arrived, and it was
difficult not to get emotional. Jeff drove me to the airport, and I asked the
couple standing in line behind us to take our photo with my camera. Finally, I
said goodbye and started toward the boarding gate. Jeff pulled be back and
kissed me hard. We hung onto each other for long moments before he released me.
We both understood that he had to stay, and I couldn’t. On the journey home, I
cried in the airplane bathroom. When I got back to England, we wrote and called
a few times, and talked about seeing each other again. We never did. I still
have the photo from the airport, and I’ll forget those beautiful blue eyes…
